In thrilling win at Cornell, Penn men's basketball takes one step closer to March Madness

Win and we’re in.

That has to be the message from coach Steve Donahue to his players after Penn men’s basketballsurvived a latethriller in Ithaca, N.Y., placing the team in a position where a win at Columbia in 24 hours’ timewould virtually guarantee a postseason bid.

Behind a superb all-around performance from freshman Ryan Betley, Penn overcame a series of Cornell runs to win 69-66 in a game that came down to the final seconds.

The Quakers (12-12, 5-6 Ivy), as they have been known to do recently, started the game out strong, opening up a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes. Despite struggling on the boards throughout, the team managed to head to halftime up 36-28. Most of this lead can be attributed to the sensational shooting of Betley, who scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the opening half.

The Red and Blue looked as if they were about to put the game away, as AJ Brodeur and Betley came out of the half on fire, but Cornell proved that it was not the type of team to roll over.

In fact, the Big Red (7-19, 3-8) proved much more than that, using a 13-0 run to take a two point lead with just underten minutes remaining. That lead would extend to four just before the seven minute mark. All hope appeared lost for the Quakers, as Cornell seemed to have all the momentum.

However, the Quakers, sensing that their playoff hopes were in jeopardy, dug deep. Betley proved that he was more than just an offensive specialist, coming up with a crucial block with 49 seconds remainingto force the Cornell shot clock violation that effectively altered the momentum of the game. On the ensuing possession, Brodeur hit a tough shot in the post to recapture the lead for Penn, 65-63.

From that point onward, Penn’s free throw shooting prevailed in a way it hadn’t all season, with Betley and junior Darnell Foreman each knocking down both of theirCheikhou Kouyate hailed victory over Bournemouth as among their “best”.Jeffrey Schlupp struck the only goal of the game on Tuesday night.Kouyate said: “We started the game very, very good. Everything was good, we fought for every ball and then we los attempts to seal the game.

Although it wasn’t necessarchanges this summer will prove successful.Villa signed 12 new players during pre-season in a spending spree of £130million, including new £22m record buy Wesley from Club Brugge.Boss Dean Smith has revamped his squad and McGinn knows the jury is ouily the prettiest or most seamless game for a Penn squad that has been running over opponents recently, its merits as an important and gritty road victory are indisputable.

That being said, a much stronger performance will be required from Penn on Saturday when the team battles Columbia on the road in the hopes of securing a spot in the Ivy League Tournament. A win would all-but guarantee Penn atictory over Arsenal.Klopp is happy to be getting full weeks of training with his players. He said, “We enjoyed a lot the opportunity to have a week of training. We will have another week of training and then we go to a very difficult place, to Burnley least the fourth-place spot, with the potential to go even further in pursuit of Yale’s current No. 3 seed.

All of the Ivy League will be watching on Saturday. Win, and Penn is in.

Penn Relays | Track legend running his final lap

A few years ago, Penn men’s track coach Charlie Powell was ushering Arkansas track coach John McDonnell through Weightman Hall to the press room.

A security guard stopped them and said that McDonnell wasn’t allowed past.

“His team just won the distance medley, and I’m taking him to the preChelsea are watching Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi. The Russia international, 26, only moved to Italy this summer from Genk.Sport Arena says his form has caught the eye of Chelsea scouts so far this season.Malinovskyi has thus far been able to play eight competition games for Atalanta. The 26-year-old’s contract with the Serie A club expires in the summer of 2024.ss room,” Powell explained.

But the guard didn’t budge.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t know who he is, so he’s not coming through.”

They turned around, and McDonnell whispered to Powell: “It’s okay. We have people like that at Arkansas, too.”

McDonnell wasn’t too miffed about the incident. After all, he’s recognized enough for his unparalleled success in track and field.

But after 30 years, 42 national titles and 83 conference championships later, McDonnell is calling it a career. He has, by far, the most national titles of any coach in any college sport, ever.

The next closest is Texas A&M; track coach Pat Henry, with 27.

Those 42 national titles comprise 11 cross-country, 19 indoor track and 12 outdoor track crowns. His 12 consecutive indoor championships, from 1984-95, set an NCAA record.

At a press conference, Arkansas vice chancellor for Athletics, Jeff Long, said: “The recognition and pride he has brought to the University of Arkansas and Razorbacks across the nation and around the world is truly legendary.”y over reports of bidding for Juventus defender Merih Demiral.Reports in Italy claim Leicester have had a bid of about £25million rejected for the player, who joined Juventus from Sassuolo only last summer. Demiral may also be allowed to depart the

McDonnell said he was stepping down to spend more time with his wife.

“She has sacrificed a lot for the sake of track and field,” he said. “She’s raised our kids, and done a great job, and now it’s time for us to do some things together.”

Powell, has known McDonnell for over 25 years, wasn’t surprised. He described McDonnell as a man who held traditional values.

“He is very dedicated to his personal family and his extended family, which is his athletes,” Powell said.

“Every one of his athletes said what a great person he is; after they graduate, they say he was a father figure. He’s given a lot to track, a lot to Arkansas, and he deserves his time off.

“It’s great to see coacarri’s move to Juventus would transform Italian football.Chelsea manager Sarri is expected to soon be named Juve coach.Sacchi said, “I’ve always thought that a Coach must be both screenwriter and director, whereas others view the role differently. hes with values like his, that coaching is about developing people, not just winning.”

In fact, every year, between tending to his cattle on his ranch in Oklahoma and winning national titles, McDonnell takes his athletes on a fishing trip.

He admitted that his one regret will be that he’s leaving his current athletes. But he’ll undoubtedly miss winning as well.

Powell remembers McDonnell jumping up and down on the sidelines after yet another national title from one of his team.

Powell asked him, half-joking, if it ever got old winning national titles.

“It never gets old,” McDonnell answered with a beaming smile.

Field Hockey: Quakers triumph without missing a beat

It only took five minutes for the Penn field hockey team to shake off the rust accumulated during a two-week break.

Dartmouth had the ball for the first five minutes of the game, but as soon as Penn got its first possession, the Quakers dominated, winning 5-1. The Red and Blue improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Ivy League.

“Dartmouth was on the fritz the whole game,” said Nicole Black, who scored two goals in the game.

Black said the defense and offense pushed each other over the last two weeks of practice, and that translated to better production in the field.

“We are really goal hungry,” she said — and it showed.

During Penn’s current three-game winning streak, it has outscored opponents 9-3.

“You never know who is going to score,” coach Val Cloud said. “It is not just one girl.”

In addition to Black, Margaretha Ehret, Meghan Rose and Jamie Calahan each also netted a goal.

Junior Meredith Moran had two assists and was part of a midfield that moved the ball eff for Nicolas Pepe was close.Pepe eventually left Lille for Arsenal in a club record €80m deal this summer. But Zubizarreta revealed: “Nicolas Pépé was on our list, he came to Marseille and we almost agreed. “It could have been done, but it was finectively in transition.

“We are moving the ball well and scoring goals from the field instead of from set plays,” Moran said. “We are really balanced on both sides of the field.”

Although Penn led 3-0 at halftime, Cloud told her squad at the break to play as if the score were 0-0.

Dartmouth goalie Ashley Heist may have been thinking the same thing, as she relieved Jordan Sedlacek, who as clash with coach Thomas Tuchel.Di Maria has wfrom home village Bambali in Senegal. In January, the goalscorer was crowned African Player of the Year for 2019.This followed a sensational year for Mane which saw the 27-year-old hit the heights by winning the Champions League, Super Cup and Club Woarned teammate Mbappe following the striker’s outburst in their 5-0 Ligue 1 win over Montpellier.Speaking after the game, Di Maria told Canal Plus: “It is very difficult, nobody wanted to go off, everyllowed three goals on four shots, at the beginning of the second.

But Heist didn’t fare any better, and Meghan Rose scored Penn’s fourth goal of the game ten minutes into the half.

After the Big Green scored their only goal of the game soon after halftime, the Quakers responded with a score of their own 31 seconds later.

Cloud was pleased that she got a chance to play every player, with the exception of backup goalkeeper, freshman Sara Heinze, during the contest.

Black and Moran both associate the three-game winning streak – which came after a distressingly slow start – with an increase in the team’s overall intensity.

Cloud and the team will try to bring that again to Wednesday’s home game against Villanova.

Needing to win for title shot, W. Squash forgets Howe

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Recovering from “the most disappointing day of squash I’ve ever had” wasn’t easy for senior and co-captain Paula Pearson or her Penn teammates.

And it was a bittersweet weekend for them at the Howe Cup in New Haven. A No. 2 seed in the championship tournament, the Quakers expected nothing less than at least a berth in the final – and a national title was well within their grasp.

But instead it was No. 1 Princeton who left with the Howe Cup. The Quakers leave Yale disappointed after a 6-3 semifinal loss to No. 3 Harvard, but proud after reversing those numbers over the host Elis to capture third place.

“We’re definitely focusing on the latter aspect of is excited to be facing with Champions League opponents Manchester City.Atalanta lost their opening two games to Dinamo Zagreb and Shakhtar Donetsk – and visit City next week.“Manchester City are certainly capable of winning the Champions League, that,” coach Jack Wyant said.

On Friday, seventh-seeded Williams provided a sparring partner, as the Quakers won, 9-0.

But the real tournament would begin Saturday, when it would come down to the top four teams in the country: Princeton taking on Yale, and Penn playing Harvard.

Confidence was high going in: The Quakers defeated the Crimson 6-3 last week at Ringe Courts, and Yale’s courts are similar to Penn’s.

Nobody expected a physical or talent letdown on the part of the Red and Blue against Harvard. If it was going to lose, Penn would lose in the mental game. According to the team, that’s what happened.

Pearson and classmate Radhika Ahluwalia both agreed that the team was too tentative in hitting shots and laid back when it should have attacked.

“We all could have played better,” Pearson said. “We might have been too focused on our next match instead of dealing with the present. I had high expectations and I think everyone else did too.”

“Mentally, they were probably more prepared than we were,” Ahluwalia said. “I think the fact that they were the underdog gave them some more motivation, a killer instinct.”

Devastating losses are not unfamiliar to the team – it lost a critical match and its No. 1 ranking to Princeton last month. But this one ended a championship dream that seemed very real, and the players would have less than 24 hours to collect themselves to face Yale for third place.

As they’ve done before, the senior trio of A win over Granada.Lionel Messi scored the only goal of the game in the second half as the hosts dominated possession at the Camp Nou.”I think it was a good,” Setien said when asked how he would grade his team’s performance.”Maybe we lacked a bit of chluwalia, Pearson, and Caitlin Russell took the initiative in leading their team.

“I told them that we could take this two ways,” Pearson said. “That we could look at it and be negative, or that we could turn it to our advantage, since Yale also lost.”

Ahluwalia made sure that the team didn’t lose sight of what they’d done all year. In her rallying cry, she said that “third in the country is great; we haven’t done that in seven years.” She added that they had to push the Harvard loss out of their minds against Yale.

On Sunday, Penn looked more like the team that was ranked first in the country. It jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and Wyant cautioned that the team had done that before against the Elis and only ended up winning 5-4.

Only this time, the wins kept on coming until the final score read an impressive 6-3.

Even the usually optimistic Wyant admitted that he druce has explained the benching of Allan Saint-Maximin for their 0-0 draw against Burnley. The French winger was only involved in a cameo role for the Magpies and didn’t look fully fit.Bruce later told the media he’d been carrying a hamstring injury.Bidn’t think the team could bounce back so quickly.

Chalk that recovery up to the team’s leadership and camaraderie. Ahluwalia said that the trio fed off of their younger teammates, who made “win it for the seniors” a theme for Sunday.

Although her two classmates won, Ahluwalia fell in her last collegiate team match. Wyant refused to feel sorry about that.

“You know, I can’t ever be disappointed with Paula or Radhika,” he said. “They’ve both won tough matches for us and lost big ones as well. But without them and their leadership, we’d never be in this position. I’m incredibly proud.”

Grading Monday’s LDS action: Orioles pitchers come up huge

content_img

(US Presswire)

We only had two games Monday, as opposed to the four games Sunday, and one was a blowout. Still, there was plenty of drama in the later game and we’re here to dole out some red ink.

: I already said starting pitcher was the hero for the Orioles in Game 2, but the entire pitching staff got it done for Monday. Chen left with one out in the seventh and a runner on first base. struck out the only batter he faced, and then induced an inning-ending fly out with runners on second and third in a one-run game. Matusz then got three more big outs in the eighth before worked a perfect ninth. Johnson’s outing was especially important considering his disastrous ninth inning Sunday night in Game 1. The Orioles really needed this one, and they got it, due mostly to their pitching staff.

With starting pitcher needing to be pulled due to a shoulder injury after just two innings — and the facing a 1-0 deficit in the series — the defending champs were put in a tough spot. The offense was easily the biggest reason for the win, but the bullpen deserves some credit here for workiners this summer.City are facing the prospect of a two year UEFA Champions League ban, unless they can successfully overturn the verdict on appeal. And it means some of their stars, such as Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, may want tg seven innings. In those seven innings, they allowed eight hits, one walk and three runs while striking out eight.

He definitely wasn’t awful and the New York offense was mostly to blame for the ‘ loss. But, it was Pettitte who coughed up an early 1-0 lead during a two-out rally in the second inning. In all, he went seven innings and gave up three runs. That’s good for a 3.86 ERA on a cold night, and cold nights are pretty conducive to good pitching. All in all, it feels like a good C, no?

The defects summer signing Rodri to improve upon his early displays.Rodri has shone in victories at West Ham and in the Community Shield against Liverpool.”Rodrigo has to play better, so does everyone,” Guardiola said. “He has potential as a young player, hense played by the Orioles, and Yankees. Balls were being booted, going through the legs of solid defenders like and , being air-mailed by and play was just generally pretty sloppy on defense in several big spots for all three of these teams. I’m not sure if it was the weather in Baltimore, but that game was especially baffling through the middle innings.

We’ll give this to the entire pitching staff. The entire team pretty much played like it was content to go home with a split, having already won Game 1, but the pitching was awful. could only last three innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. The bullpen wasn’t much better, coughing up six moessed for victory over Bordeaux on the weekend. He has now played 13 Ligue 1 games in 2019 and ASSE have won 11 of those matches. That’s a 33 points from 39 available when he has been on the pitch. Also in those 13 games, St Etienne have only conceded re earned runs on six hits. They collectively allowed four home runs, three doubles and a triple.

GM Williams on the White Sox: ‘We’re a lot better than people think’

Wednesday, White Sox general manager Ken Williams responded.

“I think we’re going to be a lot better than some people think — a lot betmas schedule.Wolves’ festive programme was already tough with matches against Manchester City and Liverpool to finish 2019 but those games will now take place on December 27 and December 29 respectively – separated by just 44 hours and 45 minutes better,” Williams said.

The White Sox haven’t looked good in Arizos they’re calm about his situation at PSG.The Polish goalkeeper left Chelsea in the summer for PSG, where he has been strictly third choice this season. But agent Yves Le Mee told Paristeam.fr: “From the start, it was agreed that he had to attack the na. They lost eight of their first 10 games, and fell far behind again Wednesday before rallying against a group of pitchers who won’t make the Angels’ major-league roster.

Meanwhile, Jake Peavy has struggled, with another scout saying that Peavy “isn’t the same guy. Even his body language shows it.”

Williams expressed confidence that Peavy will have a bounce-back year, saying that the right-hander is healthier than he has been since coming to the White Sox in a midseason trade in 2009.

“He’s got something to prove,” Williams said.

Williams also said he believes several White Sox hitters — notably Ad of their Nou Camp stadium by 2024, according to AS, reports, /.Unlike a standard naming rights deal – where the sponsor takes on sole ownership of the inventory – AS says Barcelona want any partner to come after the famous Nou Camp moniker. The dam Dunn, Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham — will show improvement.

“We have some particular guys who struggled, who are in so much better position to hit,” he said. “If we can keep them right where they are right now, they’ll have tremendously better seasons.”

Williams began last winter by saying that he planned to rebuild, if he could get the deals he was looking for. As it turned out, though, Williams only traded closer Sergio Santos and outfielder Carlos Quentin.

There’s still a chance that he could trade pitcher Gavin Floyd this spring, although Williams insists that he hasn’t had any trade talks about Floyd since spring training began. Some people even believe that Williams would still be open to trading John Danks, even after Danks signed a five-year contract over the winter.

Without discussing which players were involved, Williams admitted Wednesday that he was willing to do more “rebuilding” than he has done so far.

“We looked to see if we could acquire some of the game’s most impactful young players,” he said. “Our target list was our target list. We set the price high, and we stuck with it.”

Now, some outside the organization wonder if they’re stuck with a team that can’t win. The early spring games haven’t done much to change that thought.

Then again, as one scout remembered Wednesday, the two teams that looked the worst in Arizona last spring were the Diamondbacks and the Indians.

The Diamondbacks went on to win the National League West. The Indians led the American League Central for most of the first half of the season.
