Penn men's soccer earns first Ivy League point in 1-1 draw with Yale

A heated contest against Yale turned into yet another overtime game for Penn men’s soccer.

The Quakers saw a game full of action in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday. In a physical, back-and-forth affair, the the two squads ended the day tied 1-1.

The match was not reminiscent of what Penn (2-4-5, 0-3-1 Ivy) has seen from Yale (6-4-3, 1-1-2) in the past.

“The last two years we had just blown Yale out. They were trying to turn their program around,” junior midfielder Braystal Palace are eyeing Everton striker Cenk Tosun. The Times says Tosun is a transfer target for Crystal Palace. The Turkish striker has failed to make the desired impact at Goodison Park following his £27 million move in 2018.Tosun has had limited gndon Bartel said. “[The Elis have] a very big chance to win the Ivy League. When they’re looking at Penn they’re like we need to get points off them; we need to come out flying.”

The match’s first half was defined by a strong coordination from the Bulldogs, who kept possession out of Penn’s hands with rapid play. Despite playing well defensively, the Quakers came out flat and lacked the coordination needed to sustain any sort of offensive pressure.

With 20 minutes left in have given five potential bidders until 16:00 BST on Wednesday to make their final offers for the League One club.Joint administrator Paul Appleton said they hope a heads of terms agreement could be signed by Friday.”We have made it clear from the o the half, however, Yale broke through with a goal by Kyle Kenagy with an assist from Logan Sullivan. The score remained 1-0 until halftime.

The Quakers’ inability to score in the first half was not due to a lack of effort. Bartel attempted three free kicks in the last 12 minutes of the half, but the Quakers came up empty. The first was met with a header just shy of the goal, the second was saved by Yale sophomore goalkeeper Tom Wallenstein, and the final was sent back by Yale’s defense.

Both teams saw their fair share of fouls, with several players on both sides suffering injuries. Collisions and combativArsenal hero Robert Pires believes the sacking of Unai Emery was inevitable.Pires feels the board had no other choice. He told Canal Plus: “I think sadly yes.”Owing to the bad results, the club was unfortunately on a bad run, both in the league and the Europa League.“So a change was needed and when we speak about changes, it is usually the manager who pays.”e play meant players on both sides had to deal with an interrupted match flow.

In the second half, the Quakers began to apply more offensive pressure. Several shot attempts were made in the beginning of the half, with the majority going long. The physical play continued, with sophomore midfielder Amado Lozano going down five minutes into the half with a hamstring injury that pulled him from the game. A few minutes later, senior defender Erumuse Momoh received the first yellow card of the game after a collision.

The Red and Blue still continued their offensive push, focusing on controlling the ball in the Bulldogs’ half.

“After [the goal] we took a breath and relied on getting the ball into dangerous spaces,” Bartel said. “We really pressed them as a full 11 rather than a couple of individuals.”

The stop-and-start play continued throughout the second half. The Bulldogs were able to stunt Penn’s momentum by kicking the ball out of bounds, even three times in one minute, as Penn slowly progressed up the field.

With less than 10 minutes left in the regulation, the Red and Blue were able to take advantage of these chances. Bartel was afforded another free kick attempt after a foul from Yale midfielder Miguel Yuste. After Bartel sent the ball into a crowd of Penn players, sophomore forward Jake Kohlbrenner was able to find the back of the net and tie the game.

Toward the end of the half, the Bulldogs began to match Penn’s offensive push. Despite several dangerous runs from both teams, no goals were scored in the final minutes and the match proceeded into overtime.

Yale carried this momentum into the first overtime period, maintaining most of the possession. Both teams went the full 10 minutes without scoring, and the game entered its final period.

The Quakers matched this pressure in the second overtime, and kept possession in Yale territory. Again, however, neither team scored and the match ended a 1-1 draw.

Given the pace of play this game, a tie might be good news for Penn.

“For us right now, a tie is a great result for being away on the road,” Bartel said.

Penn will look to carry this momentum into their match against cross-city rival Temple on Tuesday.

Penn wrestling puts Harvard back in its place

In their last big test before the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in March, the Quakers put on a show Saturday against Ivy League foes Harvard and Brown.

The Crimson (4-5, 1-2 Ivy) drove the No. 22 Red and Blue (7-3, 2-1) to the edge in many bouts, but the latter avenged last year’s 23-19 loss by winning eight out of 10 bouts to secure a 24-6 victory at the Palestra.

“We were fired up,” junior Canaan Bethea (184 pounds) said. “We came out here wanting to let them know that it’s a tough sport and we’re not willing to give up anything and we want to win more than they do.”

In perhaps the most suspense-filled match of the day, Bethea defeated Harvard’s Josh Popple, 4-2, with a takedown in the second period of sudden victory. Penn’s grappler took revenge — a recurring theme for the Quakers on Saturday — after losing by technical fall to Popple earlier this year at the Binghamton Open.

“[Bethea] could have been a little bit more aggressive on his feet, because that’s where we knew we were going to win the match,” coach Rob Eiter said. “You just can’t keep it that close with a kid that’s really good on top, you got to separate the score a little bit and make him feel more urgency.”

The Quakers started the day 6-0 after No. 20 Mark Rappo scored a 6-3 victory over Jeffrey Ott at 125 pounds, followed by sophomore Jeff Canfora’s 8-5 win against Shay Warren at 133.

The dual’s most awaited bout came next, as No. 13 Steven Keith (141) of Harvard defeated No. 9 C.J. Cobb, 11-4. Keith dominated the first period, accumulating four points and almost three minutes of riding time, never looking back. The Crimson hold a 4-1 edge over Cobb in the series, and the two will rekindle their rivalry at next month’s EIWA Championships.

“One of the strategies for the Harvard team that was real smart is to get that first takedown and it really forced the match into their hands,” Eiter said. “C.J. didn’t have the same pop … at the end of the match he was scoring and attacking; and we’re trying to get him do that right away — not when you’re in a hole and are playing catch-up.”

Midway through the dual, the Quakers were only up 9-6, but the winds quickly turned in their favor, as they took home the remaining five bouts on their way to victory.

First, at 165 pounds, the Quakers’ Casey Kent defeated fellow true freshman Devon Gobbo, 7-5, reversing the situation after falling behind 4-0 early on.

“I was [really] happy with Casey’s match just because he’s [an] 18-year-old freshman, down four to nothing, and just stuck with the game plan, stuck with what he did well,” Eiter said. “Casey just plugged it away — there was plenty of time left an Ansu Fati.Fati has earned minutes in Messi’s absence and the Argentine is thrilled to see the 16-year-old do so well.”I was impressed by him the first day I saw him train,” Messi said.”Then he was playing with us, he has great quality.”We need to god he didn’t force anything.”

Penn sophomore Ian Korb (174) then took revenge over Cameron Croy — who had defeated him twice in the past — with a 2-0 victory, thanks to an escape and riding time.

“Korb’s had a little bit of a rollercoaster season … and beating the kid that had beaten him earlier in the year is important for Ian,” Eiter said. “It’s important becachester United defender Matteo Darmian admits he’s on his way Parma.Darmian is expected to join Parma on-loan.He told Sky Italia: “I can’t say anything yet, but I’m happy. For me it is also an important opportunity to reach the national team. “Whatuse that weightclass in our class is wiir roles have reversed since Buffon’s return from PSG.The Pole said, “It’s wonderful that Gigi Buffon has returned. I had the best goalkeeper in the world, Alisson Becker, as my understudy at Roma and now I have the best goalkeeper of all time backinde open; there isn’t one guy that’s really separated himself from the pack.”

Later in the day, the Quakers were victorious in all but one match against the Bears, easily winning the dual, 35-4.

And for a team that has one precise goal in mind, namely the NCAA Championships at Des Moines, Iowa from March 21-23, the recent successes make the future look bright. But to Bethea, the season is all about improving.

“I’m slowly getting better and better and that’s the brightest thing about it,” he said. “As I continue to go on throughout the season, I’m seeing myself execute my moves a little better.”SEE ALSO

With the score at 8-3 heading into the seventh inning, it appeared the Penn softball team would drop two games to Villanova yesterday.

But the Quakers rallied with six in the seventh to earn a 9-8 comeback victory in Game 2 of the doubleheader. That followed a 6-2 loss in the first game.

The win gave Penn (14-20, 2-4 Ivy) a split on the evening, its third in as many days.

The rally started on a single by junior shortstop Christina Khosravi, who led the Quakers in Game 2 by going 4-for-5.

Penn players hit five consecutive singles to start the inning and scored three runs before the Wildcats (7-26) recorded the first out.

The Quakers lost a gamble when junior Stephanie Reichert tried to score from first on a base hit to left field by junior Teresa Leyden and was gunned down at the plate for the second out.

But Leyden was able to advance to third on the throw, and she scored the eventual winning run on a passed ball.

“Our momentum was awesome,” said junior Kim May, who had a singlen London.Giroud has engaged with spiritual life in London, attaching himself to a church, St Barnabas in Kensington, part of a network connected to Holy Trinity Brompton, the modern and evangelical wing of the Church of England. “I grew up with my mo during the rally. “We just never let up. [Within the last three years,] we’ve never beaten Villanova, so it was a great win for us.”

On an afternoon when the pitching struggled for the Red and Blue, the offense carried the day.

Fifteen hits, including a home run from junior Brandi King, were enough to overcome the eight runs given up to Villanova.

“We come into every game ready to hit the ball, so as long as our pitching and our defense come together we’ll be fine,” Khosravi said.

Penn’s defense was better yesterday, with three errors in the doubleheader versus five Monday against Yale.

But the exhaustion from playing a third doubleheader in as many days caused pitching depth to become a problem.

Coach Leslie King decided to rest freshman starter Emily Denstedt, who had pitched shutouts the previous two days, for upcoming Ivy League gament of Ousmane Dembele says the Barcelona striker hasn’t been short of offers to leave this summer. However, Moussa Sissoko insists the player wants to stay at the Nou Camp.He said, “We received marks of interest from very big clubs, but I told them fes, and instead turned to junior Casey Hare, who normally plays first base.

Hare relieved junior starter Lindsey Permar in Game 1 after the latter gave up five eated midfielder Paul Pogba.Sport says the Bernabeu was believed to be his favoured destination – with Zidane himself gushing over the player. But with just days to go until the European transfer window closes, the Frenchman seems no nearer a move. And trned runs in three innings.

The first baseman, who pitched in 10 games her freshman year, gave a strong performance, allowing only one run over three innings pitched.

“I was prepared to go in if Coach needed me,” Hare said.

“I fell back into my stride like I did freshman year. I’m happy that I was able to contribute to the team and do what Coach asked me to do.”

Penn’s bats didn’t get going until Game 2, however, as Villanova starter Kat Walsh limited Penn to two runs on four hits for a complete game victory.

The Quakers will look to improve upon their performance this weekend in home doubleheaders against Cornell and Columbia.

“We know that we beat Columbia twice last year, so we’re definitely going to be pumped and positive going in,” May said.

Backline in front for M. Soccer as Ivies near

For the Penn men’s soccer team, the defense has not rested much this season. In fact, it has had plenty of work to do.

During the Penn Soccer Classic, coach Rudy Fuller’s three-man backline was under near-constant pressure and he switched to a four-back formation after losses to Lehigh and Villanova.

And defenders have scored three of the Quakers'(2-2-2) six goals this season.

But Fuller believes that the team’s level and method of goal-scoring are “a bit misleading.”

“We’ve created a bunch of chances and even [Monday against La Salle], with what little soccer was played, we had a number of quality chances that the keeper either came up big or we hit right at the keeper,” he said. “So I think I’d be more concerned if we weren’t creating those chances — but we are, so I think we keep plugging away.”

“Now that’s not to say thatRomelu Lukaku can provide something different for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should he stay at Manchester United. The Belgian has not featured in any of United’s four preseason friendlies due to a ‘niggle’.Reports have claimed that Lukaku’s injury is in fa our front six don’t need to do a bit better on the finishing,” he added.

Penn traveled to La Salle and battled to a 1-1 tie on Monday. Freshman defender Andy Howard scored the Quakers’ only goal, slotting home a set-piece service.

Sophomore defender Erik Viol hasn’t played since March amid claims he is exaggerating his problem. But he told A Bola: “I’m not simulating an injury, I’ve been receiving treatment.“My conscience is clear; I’ve wanted to play and the problem for me is that as time has passed, ante, who has scored twice this season — both from the penalty spot — did not play against the Explorers because of a leg injury, but he also believes that things will get better soon.

“The forwards are starting to gel a little bit better and the offensive players are coming together a little bit more to create creative runs ing hammered inside Holland.Dutch pundit Johan Derksen has accused Kuyt of undermining Feyenoord coach Jaap Stam, the former Manchester United defender. Kuyt is the club’s U19 coach. Before going into Sunday’s clash with FC Twente, the heat was being and things like that,” he said. “I think we’re going through a little dry period, and maybe a little luck in scoring a goal will maybe break through everything.”

In particular, Violante believes that classmates Jon Abelson, Richard Brushett and John Rhodes — who moved from midfield to forward this year — are poised to break out of their slumps.

“It’s not [Rhodes’] natural position so he’s having a little trouble,” Violante said. “Once he puts his first in, I think the rest will start flowing.”

Both Fuller and Violante believe that things will start to turn around when Penn faces Cornell to open the Ivy League season on Saturday at Rhodes Field.

“This week was a challenging week for us,” Fuller said. “We knew it going in, and coming out of those two road games in the city with a win and a draw, we’re satisfied with that.”

Violante feels that the Big Red will play a more open game than La Salle. The Explorers’ defensive style and difficult playing surface flustered the Quakers, to the point that Fuller after the match called the contest “an embarrassment and disgrace to the game.”

“There was not much soccer played,” he added after the game. The field was strewn with rocks and dirt as the La Salle men’s soccer team shares the facility with the school’s football team.

“Against La Salle when you made a pass, the ball would bounce up in the air,” Violante said. But he believes that Saturday’s game will be different.

Cornell and Penn “both look to do things similarly, we both play the same style of soccer — a possession game,” he said. “When it’s like that, it’s easier because the opposing team isn’t restricted to defense, they don’t close down into a little nutshell.”

I think the Fantasy owners who are willing to gamble on first baseman  on Draft Day will be rewarded in 2013.

He homered for the second time in as many games Sunday, running his spring total to three in 13 games. He also has 11 RBI and is batting .282 (11 for 39). And let’s not forget what he did in his limited time with Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Morneau hit .636 (7 for 11) with three doubles, three RBI and four runs in three games.

Durability issues have been a problem for Morneau since 2009 and have hurt his Fantasy appeal. Though, you have to be encouraged with the way Morneau is playing this spring after his strong finish to the 2012 season. Morneau hit .296 with a .356 OBP and .800 OPS in his last 78 games. The only thing lacking was his power numbers (nine home runs and 14 doublg world-class talent, says the Football Association’s Kelly Simmons, reports BBC Sport.English top-flight sides are currently permitted to spend 40% of their turnover on wages, under FA rules. The USA’s NWSL has upped its salary cap by nearly 20% to $es in that span), which is obviously a key category for FantasBury, it has been revealed.Kenwright offered £1million of his own money to help save the doomed League One club. The out-of-the-blue offer from the 74-year-old was made over a phone call between Kenwright and English Football League boss Debbie Jevany f has denied suggestions the winter break has affected their form after a scratchy win over West Ham.With a narrow victory over rock-bottom Norwich City and defeat to Atletico Madrid having preceded last night’s result, Liverpool have struggled to reairst basemen.

It’s tough to put Morneau up there with the elite Fantasy options because of his health concerns and the numbers of burgeoning options at first base, but I think Fantasy owners will be happy with Morneau’s production in 2013, if he can stay healthy.

First base is obviously a deep Fantasy position and there’s great value to be had late in drafts at the position. But Goldschmidt is on the verge of a breakout season and apparently I’m not the only one sensing it.

Goldschmidt got off to a slow start last season, but he hit .303 with a .379 on-base percentage, .528 slugging percentage and .907 OPS in his last 113 games. Jepsen posted a sharp 3.02 ERA and offers a blazing (average velocity 96.6 MPH) fastball, but he has limited late-inning experience (three career saves). 2013 Prospect Watch: Toronto Blue Jays

Before the start of the season, we’ll highlight a few players in each team’s minor-league system to let you know which players you should be paying attention to throughout the year. These aren’t meant to be comprehensive top-prospect lists but should provide a look at some key players within each tea by manager Unai Emery.Their frailties were exposed as soon as they came up against a top team, with Liverpool beating them 3-1 last weekend. Petit told the Mirror: “I’ve not been impressed with what I’ve seen from Unai Emery in Arsenal ‘s opem’s organization.

|  |  |

Prospects can have value in two ways. The primary one is obvious — when they reach their ceilings, they become the stars and role-players of the future. This offseason, the reminded us of their other value: trade chips. This offseason, Toronto turned most of their best prospects — numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 in their system according to  — into a team primed to compete for the American League East title. Still, the club had a deep system before the trades. It’s much weaker now, but the remains aren’t barren.

2013 Impact Player

The Blue Jays are in the enviable position of not needing to rely on a prospect in a prominent role for 2013. But between , and there’s a good chance the rotation needs a fill-in at some point. If so, it’ll likely be Nolin, a hulking 23-year-old lefty. Nolin is a four-pitch starter, with a low-90s fastball, excellent changeup and a developing slider and curveball. The changeup will be the key if he manages to make the majors in 2013, as he’s sure to be met with platoon right-handed batters in droves upon his arrival. Nolin is likely to begin in Double-A, but he tore through the low-minors and if he dominates like he did in 2012 — 2.04 ERA, 108 strikeouts against 27 walks in 101.1 innings — the Blue Jays could turn to him in the second half of 2013.

Future Star

Sanchez, Toronto’s 2010 first-round pick, was the sole jewel the club didn’t have to part with in assembling their new crew. The 20-year-old dazzled in his first run through full-season professional baseball in 2012 with a 2.49 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. He allowed just 64 hits the entire season, setting the stage for the real test this year in Double-A. At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Sanchez defines the projectable frame. He has an excellent fastball (rated tops in the system even before the trading frenzy by Baseball America, as was his curveball) and could just get better as his body fills out. The question is if he can shore up his control and command. Sanchez walked 51 and hit seven batters last season, a number he’ll need to slash before he reaches the majors. Still, his raw stuff and accomplishments in his young career make him one of the top pitching prospects in the game.

Wild Card

Stroman was a possibility to reach the majors last season before he was hit with a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance (specifically, methylhexaneamine, a compound marketed as a dietary supplement as well as a nasal decongestant). As such, we won’t be seeing Stroman early in 2013, but if he can return from his suspension and continue to show his excellent stuff, he’ll be an option for the Blue Jays’ bullpen around midseason. Stroman was a first-round selection by the Jays in 2012 out of Duke, and the polish he picked up in college is what could allow him to hit the majors so quickly. Stroman alreielder Marko Grujic.Speaking at Hertha’s AGM meeting on Sunday, Preetz revealed he is in constant talks with the Reds and Jurgen Klopp regarding a possible return to Berlin for the midfielder.”I’ll keep the ball rolling and our goal is to extend the ady features a major-league slider and used it to get 23 strikeouts in just 19.1 innings last season. He also features a fastball with upper-90s capability. The true wild card is Stroman’s height (5-9). Getting such velocity out of a short frame is a rarity, although it will make it difficult for Stroman to generate the angles necessary to get ground balls. Still, if he has two pitches that can generate swings and misses like his fastball and slider have the potential to, he can be a force out of the bullpen.

With the American League East looking as weak as it has at any time in recent years, general manager Alex Anthopoulos and the Blue Jays knew they wouldn’t have any better chance to strike. It meant parting with many of the prospects that defined the system as one of the league’s greatest. But there’s still something to be mined from Toronto’s farm system, both now and down the road.

Report: Contract talks with David Wright, R.A. Dickey in ‘preliminary stage’

The are in the “preliminary stage” of contract negotiations with and , to the New York Daily News’ Andy Martino.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has expressed that re-signing both players to long-term deals would be his top priority this offseason. Both players have options for next season, which the team is expected to pick up. Wright can be retained for $13 million, while Dickey can be brought back for $5 million. Negotiations, however, are not moving quickly. Neither the team nor the players have even submitted figures yet.

People within the organization have speculated the team will re-sign Wright, but trade Dickey, according to Martino. Most of that speculation is due to Dickey’s age, 37, which could make the club hesitant to hand out a longterm deal. At the same time, Dickey is a knuckleball pitcher and may not decline at the same rate as other pitchers. Knuckleballers are notorious for being able to pitch for a long time since the pitch places little stress on the arm.

Diamondbacks right fielder is not in the lineup for ‘s game against the Tuesday night due to a lingering thumb injury. And here’s the bad news: Upton is headed to a hand specialist and a stint on the disabled list is “not out of the question,” according to manager Kirk Gibson (). Obviously any time missed by Upton hurts, because he’s a star. The 24-year-old ild admits he has a ‘tough decision’ to make regarding his future at Liverpool .Wilson has thrived while on loan at Bournemouth, scoring six goals in 23 games in his debut Premier League season. His loan spell is drawing to an end though and he’d face toer has hailed the leadership of veteran striker Billy Sharp. The striker, who celebrated his 34th birthday last week, scored in victory over Bournemouth yesterday.”He hasn’t played as much as he would have liked. Off the pitch, he’s been a fantastifinished fourth in MVP voting in a crowded NL field last season. Then again, the D-Backs have gotten out to a 7-3 start with Upton hitting just .212/.350/.273. Texans celebrate Astros World Series berth with reenactment of Jose Altuve home run, pregame team gear

The are showing their pride for the city by supporting the Houston Astros in their plctor Osimhen this summer.Lille have set a €50m asking-price for Liverpool target Osimhen, says BuzzSport. The Reds were linked with the 21-year-old last month with the forward shining in Ligue 1 this season, netting 17 goals in all competitions.Lillayoff journey. Ahead of Sunday’s game, the Texans celebrated the Astros’ thrilling over the New York Yankees, which gave them their second American League pennant in three years.

The Astros sent the Yankees packing on Saturday with a walk-off, two-run home run by ALCS MVP Jose Altuve that punched the team’s ticket to the World Series.

Texans star arrived at Lucas Oil Stadium in style to face the  a day later. He wore and Altuve jersey on backwards so everyone could see the hero’s name on his chest.

Safety  also brought out his Astros gear to support the city’s as they look to defeat the Washington Nationals in the biggest series in baseball startmund about a price for Jadon Sancho. The Liverpool-latest-club-keen-sign-100m-rated-Borussia-Dortmund-forward-Jadon-Sancho.html” target=”_blank”>Daily Mail says Liverpool have informed Dortmund of their desire to sign Sancho this summer, with the Gerting Tuesday.

During pregame warmups, the Texans had a little fun and reenacted Altuve’s home run heard ’round Houston. Clearly these guys watched the game on Saturday.

Using an end zone pylon as a bat and a football as the baseball — the hanging slider if we are really mirroring the ALCS play — Texans players perfectly recreated the play.

It’s not easy to hit a home run with a baseball and a bat, but hitting the ball that far wh one senior player after returning to the club last week to speak with the squad. The Mirror says the outspoken Irishman was left unimpressed with a United star, who has not been named, for his approach to the talk. It is believed that the unnamed plith a football and a pylon seems pretty difficult as well.

They reacted as if a home run was hit as the Texan playing the role of Altuve “rounded the bases.” All that was missing was Joe Buck yelling, “Altuve has just sent the Astros to the World Series,” as the crowd went wild.

The Texans have shown support for their counterpart since the start of the playoffs and I have a feeling they will be tuning in on Tuesday to catch Game 1.
