Manchester United 2-0 Chelsea: Rashford and Herrera seal three points

Jose Mourinho got the better of former club Chelsea as Manchester United injected life into their top-four hopes – and the Premier League title race.Much was riding on Sunday’s Old Trafford encounter, with the battle for Champions League football heating up as Antonio Conte’s table-toppers attempt to ward off ever-improving Tottenham. The fixture lived up to the pre-match hype as Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera secured a 2-0 win which gave Mourinho revenge for this season’s defeats at Stamford Bridge. The result meant the leaders&#n is for a social media post in which he insulted England captain Harry Kane.Elliott, who became the Premier League’s youngest ever player in May when he came on as a substitute for Fulham at Wolvcontent_imges, was informed by the Football Association on Friday8217; cushion over Spurs remained at four points – the same tally that separates the Red Devils from a Champions League berth after this weekend’s games.Whatever the gap, this is a timely shot in the arm for the home side as they try to juggle their Europa League exertions and kick-start a league campaign punctuated by draws.Unlike on so many occasions this term, United managed to turn dominance into goals as they exacted revenge for the last month’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat and October’s 4-0 humbling – the last time Mourinho’s men lost a league match.United fleTottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to reports. The 22-year-old will sign a five-year deal and is due to undergo a medical in the next few days, according to Sky Sports. The report says Spurs will pay £65w out of the blocks and Rashford, leading the line in place of tired top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, turned home a fine seventh-minute opener.Herrera provided the assist after his handball was missed and the player sent off at Stamford Bridge last month rifled home a deflected second four minutes after the break.Chelsea failed to muster so much as a shot on target as a breathless match came to a conclusion, giving Mourinho a win against the club that sacked him in December 2015.The United boss claimed beforehand that facing Chelsea came with no extra emotion, but the importance of this match was clear.Mourinho made four changes against a Chelsea side without Thibaut Courtois – manager Conte refused to comment on speculation that the goalkeeper’s ankle injury was sustained playing basketball in a commercial shoot.Asmir Begovic came in for his first league appearance of the campaign, playing behind a well-oiled back line that was thrown off-kilter before kick-off.An issue in the warm-up led to Marcos Alonso hastily being replaced by Kurt Zouma in a re-jigged defence that was immediately under the cosh.Rashford snatched at a shot when United got their first sight of goal, but coolly made amends soon after. An exquisite Herrera pass was latched onto by the 19-year-old, breaking through and showing great composure to direct home.Old Trafford erupted at a seventh-minute opener that Chelsea would have every right to feel aggrieved about, given Nemanja Matic saw a pass handled by Herrera in the build-up.Referee Robert Madley was soon the focus of the home side’s ire as Diego Costa avoided sanction for needlessly shoving Eric Bailly – but the combustible striker was booked for a challenge on the centre-back later in the half.Frustration continued to bubble under the surface and the Chelsea forward clutched his face in pain after being caught by Marcos Rojo, who also appeared to have been caught before they collapsed to the deck. For all of Costa’s bluster, a wayward strike from distance was the best he could muster, while at the other end Begovic breathed a sigh of relief as Gary Cahill nearly headed into his own goal. But, four minutes into the second half, the visitors’ goal was breached again.Stand-in captain Ashley Young was unable to get away a shot but the ball fell for Herrera to produce a thumping strike, taking a deflection on its way past Begovic.Jesse Lingard curled one over soon after and Old Trafford erupted as the net rippled in the 61st minute, only for it to quickly dawn on fans that Rashford had hit wide.A curling Pedro shot deflected over as Chelsea looked to reduce the deficit, although Rashford’s strength and willingness could have brought a third had he made a cleaner connection with his shot.It was the visitors pushing as the rain began to pour, with Rojo earning a booking for a challenge on old foe Costa.Cesc Fabregas joined him in the book for a lunge on Michael Carrick, but there was to be no red cards in this intense clash – nor was there to be a shot on target for the Blues throughout the entire game.

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Jordan Henderson wonder goal helps Reds down Blues

Two firsthalf goals were enough for Liverpool to claim all three points against Chelsea on Friday evening.TheBlues, who put in a lacklustre performance, were downed by a Dejan Lovren close range finish and an excellent Jordan Henderson wonder goal, and although Diego Costa pulled one back inthe second half, olves captain Conor Coady says they must make the most of their Europa League win at Besiktas.Coady says Wolves must build on the famous win and try to go as far as possible in the Europa League. He said: “I was saying to (sporting director) Kevin TAntonio Conte’s men never truly looked like pulling the tie level at Stamford Bridge. It was a quick start to the match, with Liverpool dominating the early chances.Daniel Sturridge almost got lucky when his shot rolled through Thibaut Courtois’ body, but thankfully for the keeper the ball stopped just before the line.Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson also both had chances, as the Blues struggled to get either Eden Hazard or Diego Costa into the game. The visitors’ pressure finally paid off, when Dejan Lovren netted from inside the box after 17 minutes. A lovely ball into the area from Philippe Coutinho found the Croatian at the far post, and he struck the ball past Courtois to claim the lead for the Reds.It was shameful defending from the Blues, and Sturridge almost capitalised on Chelsea’s struggles moments later, flashing a strike just wide of the far post while trying to double the lead.Chances were few and far between for the hosts; Luiz sent two headers at goal from offside positions, and Simon Mignolet did well to punch the ball clear when Matic was lurking in a dangerous position. And the lack of attacking threat came back to haunt the Blues, when Jordan Henderson netted one of the goals of the season to double the lead.Having picked up the ball 35 yards from goal, the England midfielder sent a strike at goal which flew over Courtois’ outstretched arm and into the top corner of the net.Luiz flashed another header over the bar, but the Blues failed to get back into the game before half-time – with harsh words expected from Antonio Conte in the dressing room. And it was the hosts who started the second half the brighter, Oscar sending Willian’s cross at goal for an early chance.Ivanovic went down inside the area as calls for a penalty went up around Stamford Bridge, but nothing was given, and Chelsea continued to struggle to create chances for Diego Costa. But it only took Costa one chance to get the Blues back into the game, with the Spaniard converting a first-timtclassed Watford to win the FA Cup final 6-0 on Saturday.Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus both scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s team became the first English men’s side to achieve the feat of winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup in the e finish after some excellent build-up play from Hazard andcontent_img Nemanja Matic.Liverpool started to look shaky at the back, with Costa forcing a save from Mignolet five minutes later.Hazard broke with an excellent counter attack but the move came to nothing, before Willian’s drive deflected into the keeper’s hands with 15 minutes remaining.Courtois then kept the Blues in the game, pulling off a wonder save to deny Divock Origi a close range header which would have restored the Reds’ two-goal lead.Fabregas hit the wall with a close range free-kick in the dying stages, and although Victor Moses threatened after coming on as a substitute,Liverpool held on for the win and headed back to Merseyside with all three points to their name.

Bournemouth FC news: Premier League club announce plans to build new stadium at new location

Bournemouth are to start looking for a site to build a new stadium away from their existing home for the start of the 2020-21 season.Chief executive Neill Blake issued a statement ocontent_imgn Friday afternoon confirming the club board had taken the decision following on-going discussions over plans to develop the 11,464-capacity Vitality Stadium with owners Structadene and Bournemouth Borough Council. The Cherries won three promotions in six seasons to rise from League Two into the top flight of English football for the first time under manager Eddie Howe in 2015 before then retaining their Premier League status.A club statement read: “The shareholders want to create a legacy of AFC Bournemouth becoming an established Premier League club in a stadium which is befitting of our status, and we believe that building a new stadium on a new site will allow us to deliver that.”Bournemouth have been established at their current site in Kings Park since 1910, wiRui Patricio saved Pogba’s effort to ultimately secure a 1-1 draw for the hosts.Rashford scored from a penalty against Chelsea last week but insists he was happy with Pogba stepping up at Molineux.”Paul wanted to take it, it’s that simple,” says Rashth a brief spell at Dorchester’s Avenue Stadium during 2001 following building work at their home ground. However, the Vitality Stadium, formerly known as Dean Court, holds the smallest capacity of any Premier League club, which must accommodate some 6,827 season ticket holders and is only able to offer a maximum allocation of 1,366 seats for away supporters.Proposals had been submitted up to redevelop the South Stand.Blake’s statement, though, confirmed the issue over ownership and planning meant the board had decided to take the difficult decision to explore options away from their long-established home.“It has always been the board of directors’ preferred option to buy the stadium back from Structadene and develop a Premier League-standard stadium on the current site at Kings Park. However, following discussions over a number of months with both Structadene and Bournemouth Borough Council’s planning department, it has become apparent that this will not be possible,” the statement said.“Firstly, we are nody to sign an extension as soon as a contract is presented to him.”I can’t demand that a contract is put on the table, that has to come from them,” said Hodgson. “But I have never had any real doubt or fears that wouldn’t happen.”Certainly it has beet going to develop a stadium we do not own and will not be held to ransom over a price to purchase the existing site. And secondly, the council’s planning department have made it clear that they would not welcome a significantly bigger stadium in Kings Park, meaning we are severely constricted in what we can achieve on this site with regards to size, capacity and facilities.“Therefore, we feel we have no other option but to find a new site and are working closely with Bournemouth Borough Council to identify a suitable location.“The board and shareholders have given great thought to meet not only the needs, but also the expectations, of supporters.“It is crucial that we have a capacity that meets the ever-growing demand for tickets, that we are able to provide access for disabled supporters that meets new government guidelines, that we can improve and increase our hospitality offering and that we have a stadium that is used throughout the year by the community, and not just on matchdays.“We are working tirelessly to identify a site and it is our ambition that a new stadium would be built in time for the start of the 2020-21 season.”
