Juan Mata has told talkSPORT he was annoyed byspeculation he was set to leave Manchester United in the summer, and has insisted he feels happy and important at Old Trafford. The playmaker was widely expected to depart the club following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as manager, having been sold by the Portuguese when he was in charge at Chelsea. The Spaniard has neverspoken directly to Mourinho about his situation, but insists he has never had any fears over his futurewith the Premier League giants.Asked, in a special interview to be aired on Sunday, if he had any conversations with Mourinho about his status at the club, Matareplied: “No. It all goes naturally.“Obviously people want to know what is happening inside football or try to imagine what is happening inside but most of the time what happens inside is more normal than people think.“Sometimes it is not even a conversation. It is training and training and training, playing and speaking through football, speaking through the ball, and I like that.“When you are outside and you try to know what is going on your mind is endless.“I don’t know what he [Mourinho] thought, but I did what fielding offers from Arsenal and Barcelona.Former Danish star Lerby, now a long time and influential agent, is a big fan of Overmars’ work. And he told De Telegraaf: “If I were Overmars, I would definitely go shopping at PSV, Feyenoord and AZ. Then I always did. Not just here in Manchester but during my career, and all footballers’ careers, there are always rumours and you have to do your job.I did mine and I am trying to do mine the best I can.“I was and am very happy in the team. I feel important in the team and that is it. I feel loved from the fans and the rest is speculation.”Mata revealed he was bombarded withmessages from friends and family over the summer break, who were all concerned he would be forced out of the club after reading the rumours.“It gets to you because even if you don’t read them [the newspapers] then a friend or a family member calls you and says,‘what is this, what is that, are you moving here, are you moving there?’,” the Spain international added.“There was a lot of things said that I didn’t like and they were not true, that was the big problem. If they say something that is maybe happening then that is fine, but [when they are]creating storiesI don’t like [it].“They werget.Gunners boss Unai Emery will only have a £40million war chest this summer to try to close the gap on champions Manchester City and Liverpool who dominated the Premier League last season. Pires said: “I read that Arsenal have a small envelope fe saying that I was leaving, that I was going to this club, that I was speaking to this club, that I had conversations with the manager about this, that I was changing my number – a lot of things that were not true.“Every single day you can try and stop it by saying,‘this is not true’, but then you get crazy or you can do what I did which is, ‘Ok, you can say whatever you want, I know what is going on, I know the truth and I prefer to stay focused on what I have to do’. My mind was fully focused on that.“I replied to my friends and my family and told them nothing was true and that was it.”
Marcos Alonso has revealed he always wanted to return to England and prove himself in the Premier League. The 26-year-old fullback joined Chelsea in the summer for £24million and previously enjoyed spells with r Berbatov says his old club will miss out on the top four this season.Berbatov reckons the season will pan out in almost identical fashion as last year with both Arsenal and Man United again missing out on a place in the Champions League.”UnfortunatBolton Wanderers and Sunderland in the top flight. And the former Fiorentina defender has made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge, becoming an integral part of Antonio Cr League. The striker arrived from Hull City, where he has spent the past six seasons.Bowen managed 54 goals in 131 matches for the club, and will want to do even better for the Hammers. He is fully confident of the club surviving the drop this season, onte’s much heralded back-five.Chelsea lead the way at the top of the table and sit nine points clear of nearest rivals Tottenham ahead of this weekend’s fixtures. And Alonso said he had no hesitation in joining Conte’s rebuilding project in west London.“I have always enjoyed my time here [in England]. The Premier League is the best league in the world and it’s nice to play football here,” Alonso told talkSPORT.“It was always an idea I had in mind and when they told me about Chelsea [being interested] – it’s a team I’ve always loved – I used to come to watch when I was a kid.“When I was playing for Bolton, I used to ask [Daniel] Sturridge for tickets to come to the game and obviously I didn’t hesitate about coming here.”In the past two weeks, the Blues have extended their gap at the top, despite facing fixtures against Liverpool and Arsenal. After watching the club finish tenth last season, Alonso insists he and his teammates never had any doubts about their title credentials.“I think the belief has always been there. With the training we’re doing and the focus we’re having – it’s easier to go [for the title].“We just have to keep working at the same level and keep fighting to maintain that gap until the end.”Chelsea travel to Burnley this Sunday knowing they could potentially move 12 points clear of second placed Tottenham with a win.But with Burnley winning nine of their 13 home games this season, Alonso is not taking Sean Dyche’s side lightly ahead of their clash at Turf Moor.“They are the third [best] in the table for playing at home and we know it’s going to be a very tough game.“It is a very difficult stadium to play. Obviously, the way we play changes depending on the other team.“But we are working with our principles and we will try to play with our style and try to win there.”
Interim England boss Gareth Southgate has left the door open for Marcus Rashford to play at the European Under-21 Championship next summer.Manchester Uhe club should’ve fought harder to keep Maurizio Sarri.Sarri left Chelsea last month to take charge of Juventus.“I think the best of Maurizio’s work comes not in the first year but more from the second year onwards,” he told talkSPORT.“Looking atnited manager Jose Mourinho has doubts whether Rashford should feature at the youthtournament in Poland but Southgate wants to take the striker’s season on face value.Mourinho said last week if Rashford was a regular for the senior side he should not go to next summer’s tournament after they qualified this month.Southgate gave Rashford his Under-21 debut in September when he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Norway and then selected him for his first senior squad in October after Sam Allardyce’s exit.Rashford has scored once in five senior caps but Southgate will not rush into a decision.“It’s always a case of what’s right for the individual player,” Southgate said, in an interview withPress Association Sport.“That’s why you can’t make decisions on players at this stage of the season. You have an idea what you think is the ideal pathway for an international young player but you have to bear in mind the season they have and where they are in terms of being involved in the senior team.“It’s a scenario we went through two years ago but there is a point where young players are still viewed as being part of the development teams. There’s also a point where we have to decide if they are still in development teams and is that going to benefit them or have they moved through it?“As we have seen in the last couple of months Marcus is between the two. We have to wait and see what it looks like as we move forward.“Everything looking forward is hypothetical, I can only talk more generally, we always try to view what’s right for the individual and what experience we’d like them to have to prepare them to go into the senior team and be successful.”Rashford is starting ahead of England captain Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford and Southgate admitted making a call early would avoid speculation, but will continue to speak to UnitFleetwood Town have signed Sheffield United striker Ched Evans for an undisclosed fee.The 30-year-old scored 18 goals whilst on loan at the League One club last season.”Ched has been our number one target all summer,” Fleetwood boss Joey Barton told the club website.”Everyone saw the impact he had on and off the pitch last season.”ed and Mourinho.“When there is that clarity it saves us a debate for months about who’s going to go,” he said.“I knew from the start of this (under-21) campaign John (Stones) and Raheem (Sterling) were going to be with the seniors and then Eric (Dier) and Dele (Alli) moved up and were starters in the Euros.“You are always reviewing where a player’s at, how many matches they are playing and what’s best for them. We are always liaising with the clubs on that as well.“Everything I have seen Jose say is perfectly reasonable.”Southgate has been replaced as interim under-21 boss by Aidy Boothroyd who won both his games in charge – against Kazakhstan and Bosnia-Herzegovina – to help the squad qualify.Boothroyd, like Southgate, is waiting to discover his long-term future and with or without Rashford, Southgate wants the Under-21s to succeed next year.“To be going to a fifth tournament on the bounce, that’s the best in Europe,” he said.“I think you have to win the group to get to the semi-finals so it’s even more challenging than the last couple. There’s a lot of experience in the squad from the last tournament which they’ll want to put to good use.”
This interview appears in the current edition of Sport magazine, the brilliant FREE weekly publication packed with loads of great stuff. or check out their and The start of England’s new era hasn’t exactly gone to plan. Sam Allardyce’s reign started with a laboured 1-0 win over Slovakia and ended a few weeks later, when the England manager and the Football Association “mutually agreed to part company” after just 67 days.Interim manager Gareth Southgate will therefore be the man in the hot seat this weekend when England take on Malta atdoesn’t believe United will develop a crop of youngsters as successfully as Sir Alex Ferguson did in the mid-90s.“When you see Man United, there is potential there,” Wenger told beinSports. “They have not found the collective way, maybe because a Wembley – their first match on home soil since a shock defeat to Iceland brought a disastrous end to their European Championship campaign.“We have a big point to prove after what happened in the Euros,” says England and Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kyle Walker when we catch up with him a few days before Allardyce’s unexpected departure.“It was good to get out on the field against Slovakia wutch great Wim Kieft has taken aim at Marcel Brands over his work at Everton.Kieft says the former PSV Eindhoven sports chief is blowing his job at Goodison Park.He wrote for the De Telegraaf: “He has a budget there that they are even jealous of at Aith virtually the same group of players, and start putting things right from where we messed up.”The 26-year-old returned from his first senior international tournament disappointed with the outcome, but determined to make a positive start to the new season with his club.Spurs’ season has started well, with just one defeat in their first 10 games in all competitions. That came in their opening Champions League match, against Monaco at Wembley. Walker will earn his 21st England cap on the same pitch against Malta on Saturday night. He tells Sport he deserves to be there.“We worked hard last season to get there [the Champions League], so it was an emotional night. We fully deserve to be where we are, I think it’s just down to us as players to take responsibility on the pitch when things aren’t going well. We need to stick together. As the old saying goes, you win together and lose together. We dusted ourselves off and got back on with it.”“Most definitely. We analyse every game – win or lose – to see what we can do better and how we can control the game a lot more. The gaffer brought the video out a few days after, so we could study where we went wrong and what we could do better.”“We had to draw a line under it to move forwards. Obviously there was a different manager and different staff. As players we’re just focused on going on to do things that we know we’re capable of achieving.”“Obviously I wish it had panned out better on the field. But off it, it was a good experience. Having two young boys, I thought it was going to be a bit difficult, missing them and everything. But the group of players was fantastic, which helped. We’re all roughly the same age, so we get on – and a lot of us have played together. There was me, Dele [Alli], Danny [Rose], Harry [Kane] and Eric [Dier], so there was a good core from Tottenham who are used to seeing each other day in, day out. That helped.”“Sometimes you have to look at your own performances and analyse your own game. I feel I did well – like I carried my form over from the season before and tried to replicate it on the big stage that was the Euros. I was a big threat going forward, especially in the Wales game. I spoke to Gary Neville after that game and my stats were fantastic. But there’s no ‘I’ in team. It’s not just about me. It’s a collective game; that’s what I care about first and foremost.”“We were warned that everything was going to get multiplied by 10 – that’s how things are. You just have to take it on the chin and dust yourself down. In football there’s always another game where you can put it right and, nine times out of 10, last week’s news is forgotten. The media are entitled to their opinion. But it is that – their opinion. Good or bad, I don’t listen to much of what they say.”“We just need to do the basics well. That’s all we can do, really. If we try our best, that’s all you can ask for. I don’t think we need to feel any pressure out there, because that’s the big thing – we carry a lot of weight on our shoulders. If we go out and play with a smile on our faces and enjoy the game we love, then that’s when you’ll get the best out of us.”“It was against Spain at home under Fabio Capello. He says: ‘Kyle, you’re on.’ So I got excited. The adrenaline was pumping through me. I went on and think I did maybe a 70-yard sprint to try and counterattack them. I was knocked for six after that, so that’s what I remember first and foremost. It was a great moment for me and my family to finally put my name on a jersey at senior level and represent my country – especially at Wembley.”“Yeah, and it means I’m getting older [laughs]. Hopefully there’s more to come. There’s a lot of competition. Obviously Glen Johnson [at right-back] had the nod before, and now there’s me and Nathaniel Clyne [who is currently injured]. I play better with the competition, though, and it’s great for the country to have two right-backs in form.”“Putting it on for the first time. I remember when I got called up for the first time [for a friendly against Denmark in February 2011, when he didn’t make it on to the pitch]. I thought it was a wind-up because I was on loan at Aston Villa at the time. It was a great moment when I realised it was for real. I was in Sheffield at my mum’s house – she started crying, my dad was jumping up and down. It was a great feeling.”
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has given Harry Kane the green light to join the England squad after the striker’s goal against Arsenal.Kane was handed a surprise start at the Emirates after seven weeks out with an ankle ligament injury and he justified his manager’s faith with a second-half equaliser from the penalty spot in the 1-1 draw.“Can he be in the England squad? I had contact n the Premier League after Kevin Wimmer’s own-goal had earlier put the home side ahead. The 23-year-old certainly showed signs of rust and came off after 72 minutes, but his contribution paves the way for international selection, with Gareth Southgate set to announce his squad on Sunday evening.England play Scotland in a World Cup qualifier on Friday before hosting a friendly against Spain four days later.Kane’s comeback is welcome news for Southgate but the interim England manager may have lost two other Spurs players after Kyle Walker limped off and Dele Alli twisted his knee in training on Saturday.Alli will miss both of England’s fixtures after Pochettino earlier said he expected the midfielder to be out for “a few weeks”.“I haven’t had time to see Kyle Walker, he is with a doctor too,” Pochettino said.“We will see after the press conference if he can go or not. Dele Alli suffered a minor problem in his knee. He clashed doing tactics yesterday and twisted his knee a little bit. It’s a minor, minor problem but impossible he could be available today.”
