2013 Team Preview: Toronto Blue Jays

| Blue Jays: | |

The enter the season in a quite different light than they have entered any season for the past decade-plus: They are in the spotlight. No team garnered as many headlines as the Blue Jays in the offseason, as they went out and added , , , , and more. Will this be enough to make a 73-89 team into a contender? Absolutely, because we must consider how much injuries ravaged the Jays last season. They used 12 different starting pitchers, was held to 92 games and was held to 125. Also, there is expected improvement from some younger players like Lawrie and , in addition to a bounce-back season from former ace .

Remember when the ? Maybe not, since they have made two blockbuster trades since then, but Izturis could serve as a backup at second base, shortstop and third base while being fully capable of starting several times a week. He has a career .337 on-base percentage, good speed (17 steals in 19 attempts last season) and is a capable defender. That’s a pretty good player to have around as an insurance policy at three different positions, especially since the Blue Jays had such major injury woes last season.

“A limited number Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell has revealed Didier Drogba was in tears by Jose Mourinho’s sacking.Sidwell recalls how none of the players agreed with a decision which destroyed the “family culture” in the Chelsea dressing room.”I’ve been at of saves caused Janssen’s breakthrough to go by the wayside last year. But while , and made history with the kind WHIPs they were putting up, Janssen’s 0.86 mark ranked fifth among closers with at least 50 innings. And it’s not like his 2.54 ERA or 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings were anything to sneeze at. So then … about those saves. Beginning 2013 as the team’s closer will help. He didn’t claim ninth-inning duties from an injured Sergio Santos until May last year, and by then, the Blue Jays starting rotation was so decimated by injuries that a closer was hardly necessary. They either outslugged the competition, or they lost. Obviously, that formula is destined to change this year with all the upgrades they made this offseason, particularly to their starting rotation. Add, say, 15 to last year’s save total, and you’ll see why Janssen is a bargain after the top 20 closers go off the board.” — Scott White []

I think it’s how well-rounded the offense is. There are speedy table-setter types in Reyes, Bonifacio and Izturis. There are two potential 40-homer power hitters in Encarnacion and Bautista. There’s the power-speed combo in Lawrie and a possible hit-machine in Cabrera. As long as the Jays stay healthy — which is a huge question after last season — they will be able to beat teams offensively in a number of ways. Teams this well-rounded are great bets to stave off extended team-wide slumps.

The back end of the bullpen. Janssen has never been a full-time closer, Santos is coming off surgery and Delabar has had control issues at times. Overall, I don’t think this is a huge issue and the trio is more than capable enough to have a py Aston Villa following a training ground bust-up.The on-loan Chelsea man reportedly headbutted Villa teammate Jota, with his future at the club now being discussed.Phillips says he’s surprised about the conduct of his former Leicester teammate, but roductive season, but I had to name something here, and there really isn’t a glaring weakness on this ballclub.

For the first time since 1993, the Blue Jays win the World Series. They definitely have enough talent, and this should be the ultimate goal for this club in 2013.

There are obvious areas where the wheels could totally fall off here. Reyes, Johnson and Morrow are injury risks, to various degrees. Which Melky are the Jays gonna get? What if Encarnacion’s power surge last year was a fluke? What if Janssen spits the bit as closer and Santos can’t regain pre-injury form? What if Romero is just as bad as he was last season? What if Lawrie’s all-out style recklessy injures him? Rasmus and Lind are enigmas offensively as well. Dickey’s old and last season’s numbers are an outlier compared to the rest of his career. In the tough AL East, if everything that could possibly go wrong does, I could see the Blue Jays ending up in last place.

Honestly, though, what are the odds that every single bad thing listed above happens and nothing good happens? Very, very low. There will be injuries, but every team deals with those. Dickey’s 2012 season came from out of nowhere because he started throwing his knuckler harder, not because he just started to get lucky out of the blue, and Encarnacion has always shown the ability to hit for big-time power when he’s in the lineup.

It’s tough to predict how Cabrera, Rasmus and Lind will fare, but overall there is so much talent here that I don’t see a realistic scenario where they miss the playoffs. In fact, I predict they win the AL East for the first tining over a loan deal for Islam Slimani.Inter are turning to the Algeria international after being informed that Chelsea were removing Olivier Giroud from their transfer list.Slimani is currently on-loan with AS Monaco, but both parties are willing tme since …

Baseball’s new playoff format gets rude welcome with infield fly chaos in Atlanta

(Getty Images)

ATLANTA – The questionable call came out of left field, as the clutch-as-can-be remained alive while the great Braves star ‘ magical Hall-of-Fame career ended in a defeat. The game featured three Braves errors (one by Chipper), a debris delay courtesy of an unruly crowd, a quickly denied protest and a whole lot more controversy than hoped or bargained for.

The game surely lived up to its name as the first ever one-game, do-or-die wild-card playoff.

More on Cards-BravesRelated links

The new format was intended to trigger excitement. But what baseball got instead was unwanted controversy.

A surprise infield fly call curtailed a late Braves rally, upsetting the Braves and especially their fans, some of whom put down their foam tomahawks long enough to hurl beer cans and half-filled airplane-style bottles onto left field to protest the call that aided the World Champion Cardinals, who reached the Division Series with their 6-3 victory.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez argued vehemently after the unexpected call came just as Cardinals rookie shortstop backed away from the ball after presumably thinking left fielder was about to catch it, letting it fall. Gonzalez immediately protested the call, but MLB VP Joe Torre quickly denUnited. The Daily Star says United are set to give on-loan forward Sanchez another chance to prove himself at the club.Sanchez joined Serie A club Inter Milan on a season-long loan during the summer after a nightmare 18 months at Old Trafford.Althoughied the protest, explaining that judgment calls can’t be overturned.

Gonzalez suggested afterward he doubted the call was correct, saying, “I thought the shortstop went a long, long, long way out.” Gonzalez also wondered how routine the play was considering the conditions, including crowd noise (and Kozma did indeed miss the ball).

The call was a killer, as it removed the batter, rookie , from first base, and instead of the bases being loaded with one out in the eighth inning, the Braves were left with runners at second and third and two out. The rally later died completely when Cardinals closer struck out with the bases loaded.

The call was crucial, but the Braves handled defeat professionally. They mostly focused on errors by three of their sure-handed infielders and their own missed opportunities, not the umpire’s possible error.

“Ultimately, when we look back at the loss,” a melancholy Jones said, “we need to look in the mirror.”

Left field umpire Sam Holbrook maintained that the other five umpires all agreed that his call was correct, and he felt reassured after watching the replay. Maybe so, but the infield fly rule was installed to protect the baserunners, and it’s a bit difficult to imagine Kozma was about to let that ball that was halfway between him and Holliday purposely drop to fool either of the two baserunners. He did appear to be camping under it before he inexplicably pulled away.

The call seemed pretty iffy here. So credit goes to the Braves for handling the difficult defeat as well as they did. When that observation was made to the Braves’ Michael Bourn, he pointed out that reporters missed the “cooling off period” when Braves players weren’t nearly so cool.

Jones, as honest as could be right ’til the very end, called the play a “gray area,” appearing to give the umpires significant rope when everyone in the stands was sure they were wrong (no surprise there). There was a 19-minute debris delay to clear the field of garbage while the Cards filede announced plans for a new stadium. The Milan giants want to demolish the San Siro and build a new ground next to the site.”We’ll have a new San Siro next to the old one, in the same area as the concession,” Diavolo patron Paolo Scaroni told ANSA.“ toward the dugout in their own “cooling off” time (for the fans).

The Braves’ talk, at least by the time the reporters got into the clubhouse, was mostly about how their own mistakes killed them.

“The one call isn’t the thing that determined the whole thing,” Bourn said.

Like Jones, Bourn opted for the mirror. “That wasn’t us out there tonight,” he said. “We pride ourselves on playing the game right. Tonight, we just didn’t have it going.”

Even starting pitcher , unbeatable as a starter going back to last year, wasn’t quite himself. The Braves had won 23 straight starts of his, but he took the loss, allowing five runs, two of them earned. He had allowed only 11 runs in 12 starts this year.

Medlen wasn’t as perfect as usual, but he wasn’t to blame, either. Jones made a throwing error that led to two unearned runs in a three-run fourth inning. Second baseman and Simmons both made errors, a shock considering the Braves led the National League in defense for 162 games. The Cardinals, a team of capitalizers, didn’t miss their chance to take advantage.

The Cardinals are making a habit of winning the close ones. Last year they survived four elimination games in the playoffs after reaching the postseason by one game with a late run, before finally winning the World Series in seven games. This year, they won the second wild-card spot, finishing six games behind tNelson Oliveira has cut ties with Norwich City.Norwich have announced the departure of striker Oliveira. He has joined Greek side AEK Athens on a permanent deal. The 27-year-old netted 20 goals in 70 appearances for the Canaries.he Braves while losing five of six to in the regular season.

Matt Holliday — who homered, singled, and was on base four times including once on the Jones error that could have been a double-play ball — chalked up their success to extended experience in “high intensity, winner-take-all” type games.

Of course, Holliday concluded, “I think it’s taking years off my life.”

To say nothing about how the Braves feel.

Jones felt responsible. “Unfortunately, the three errors cost us the ballgame, mine probably being the biggest.”

There was a lot of lamenting in Atlanta’s clubhouse. Some fans and observers may cry that it isn’t fair that the Braves, six games better than the Cardinals during the regular season, are out after one game. And Gonzalez wondered if the system might be “tweaked” next year. The answer is no, by the way.

Many of the Braves seemed a bit stunned that it was truly the end.

“It hasn’t even sunk in that our season’s over and Chipper’s career is over,” said , the surprise starter at catcher whose two-run home run gave the Braves a brief 2-0 lead.

“I don’t know if I’m sad or pissed,” Ross also said. “I don’t even know what emotion I have.”

The Braves fans weren’t nearly so conflicted. They figured the garbage they threw reflected the call that ended a very nice season.

Grading Monday’s LDS action: Orioles pitchers come up huge

(US Presswire)

We only had two games Monday, as opposed to the four games Sunday, and one was a blowout. Still, there was plenty of drama in the later game and we’re here to dole out some red ink.

: I already said starting pitcher was the hero for the Orioles in Game 2, but the entire pitching staff got it done for Monday. Chen left with one out in the seventh and a runner on first base. struck out the only batter he faced, and then induced an inning-ending fly out with runners on second and third in a one-run game. Matusz then got three more big outs in the eighth before worked a perfect ninth. Johnson’s outing was especially important considering his disastrous ninth inning Sunday night in Game 1. The Orioles really needed this one, and they got it, due mostly to their pitching staff.

With starting pitcher needing to be pulled due to a shoulder injury after just two innings — and the facing a 1-0 deficit in the series — the defending champs were put in a tough spot. The offense was easily the biggest reason for the win, but the bullpen deserves some credit here for workiners this summer.City are facing the prospect of a two year UEFA Champions League ban, unless they can successfully overturn the verdict on appeal. And it means some of their stars, such as Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, may want tg seven innings. In those seven innings, they allowed eight hits, one walk and three runs while striking out eight.

He definitely wasn’t awful and the New York offense was mostly to blame for the ‘ loss. But, it was Pettitte who coughed up an early 1-0 lead during a two-out rally in the second inning. In all, he went seven innings and gave up three runs. That’s good for a 3.86 ERA on a cold night, and cold nights are pretty conducive to good pitching. All in all, it feels like a good C, no?

The defects summer signing Rodri to improve upon his early displays.Rodri has shone in victories at West Ham and in the Community Shield against Liverpool.”Rodrigo has to play better, so does everyone,” Guardiola said. “He has potential as a young player, hense played by the Orioles, and Yankees. Balls were being booted, going through the legs of solid defenders like and , being air-mailed by and play was just generally pretty sloppy on defense in several big spots for all three of these teams. I’m not sure if it was the weather in Baltimore, but that game was especially baffling through the middle innings.

We’ll give this to the entire pitching staff. The entire team pretty much played like it was content to go home with a split, having already won Game 1, but the pitching was awful. could only last three innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. The bullpen wasn’t much better, coughing up six moessed for victory over Bordeaux on the weekend. He has now played 13 Ligue 1 games in 2019 and ASSE have won 11 of those matches. That’s a 33 points from 39 available when he has been on the pitch. Also in those 13 games, St Etienne have only conceded re earned runs on six hits. They collectively allowed four home runs, three doubles and a triple.

Perpetually unheralded Ben Zobrist still getting it done for Rays

(US Presswire)

The are surging toward the playoffs once again, having won eight straight games. It’s gonna be tough to make the postseason, as they Orlando City, could sell the club in 2022 when he turns 50 in order to focus on philanthropic efforts, reports, /.The Brazilian businessman, 47, has told Estadão, a São Paulo daily newspaper, that he intends to sell on his stake in the soccer franctrail the last wild-card spot by two games with only six remaining in the season. Still, they have a shot, and the seemingly always-unheralded is a huge reason why.

It’s true is the Rays’ superstar position player and the most important member of the lineup. It’s also true the Rays’ lifeblood is their pitching serre-Emerick Aubameyang needs to look elsewhere.Wright has admitted star striker Aubameyang deserves to be at a better team than Arsenal.”If you can imagine him in a better team, he would be winning Premier Leagues and vying for places in Champions Ltaff, led by Cy Young frontrunner and dominant closer . But they wouldn’t be where they are without Zobrist’s usual, under-the-radar production.

Offensively, Zobrist fills up the stat sheet. If you only look at the triple-crown stats, he’s not overly impressive — .270 average, 18 homers, 71 RBI — but we’re all evolved enough by now to look deeper, right? Zobrist has 38 doubles, seven triples and 14 stolen bases. He also has drawn a whopping 91 walks, helping to give him an impressive .375 on-base percentage.

Defensively, Zobrist remains one of the most valuable players in the league based upon his versatility. Entering the season, he hadn’t played shortstop since 2009, but he’s now the Rays’ everyday shorstop. He’s also gone through spells of being a regular second baseman and right fielder this season, and he’s more than adequate at all three spots.

Simply, the Rays can plug Zobrist in almost anywhere and they’ll get quality work both offensively and defensively. And as they have gotten real hot in this late surge, Zobrist has been as integral as anyone.

During the Rays’ eight-game winning streak entering Friday night, Zobrist is hitting .346/.455/.577 with three doubles, a homer, three RBI and five runsgo Sacchi is excited by the prospect of Maurizio Sarri taking charge of Juventus. After leading Chelsea to the Europa League title last night, Sarri is now the subject of talks with Juve over a compensation fee.“Sarri winning with Chelsea gave me gr. But he has been hot for almost two months. Since Aug. 3, Zobrist is hitting .322/.395/.522 while taking over a defensive position that he hadn’t played in three years (his first action at shortstop this season was Aug. 9).

So while Price, Rodney and Longoria rightfully get their due, don’t forget about how much value the unheralded Zobrist brings to this team. He’s every bit as important to their postseason chances.

Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky dies at 92

(Getty Images)

Former Red Sox infielder and manager Johnny Pesky has died at the age of 92.Pesky, who missed three seasons due to his service in World War II, played 10 years in the big leagues, eight of those with the Red Sox before finishing his career with the Tigers and Senators. He finished his career a .307/.394/.386 hitter with 1,455 hits.Pesky managed the Red Sox in 1963 and 1964 and again served as the team’s interim manager for five games in 1980.The right field foul pole at Fenway Park is known as Pesky’s Pole, named after the left-handed hitting Pesky. The legend is that the name stems from a game in 1948 when Pesky hit a game-winning home run just around the short porch in right field at Fenway. Pesky had just 17 home runs in his 4.745 at-bats in the big leagues. Pesky’s No. 6 was retired by the team in 2008.

Members of the Red Sox front office have offered up the following statements:

“We have lost a dear and beloved friend,” said owner John Henry. “Johnny was happiest when wearing the Red Sox uniform. He was able to do that for 61 wonderful years. He carried his passion for the Sox, for Fenway Park, and for baseball everywhere he went, and he was beloved in return. We will miss him. We share the sadness that his family and legions of friends are all feeling.”

“Johnny was one of the wonderful links to 70 years of Red Sox history,” said chairman Tom Werner. “He was the grandfather of the Red Sox. He was as loving and kind a gentleman as one could imagine. His stories were delightful, and his love of Ted Williams and his teammates s to Newcastle United.According to The Sun, the 27-year-old has been a target for Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez in the past.Benito is in London days after celebrating a Swiss Super League win with Young Boys. However, he is out of contract this summer afhone through in virtually every conversation. We know that those stories, and his spirit, will continue to live on at Fenway Park. We extend our sympathies to his son, David, his daughter-in-law Alison, and all of the members of the Pesky family.”

“Johnny Pesky will forever be linked to the Boston Red Sox,” said president and CEO Larry Lucchino. “He has been as much a part of Fenway Park as his retired Number 6 that rests on the right-field façade, or the foul pole below it that bears his name. But beyond these physical testaments, Johnny will be remembered most for his warmth, kindness, and loyalty. It was through his countless friendships that Johnny made his greatest impact on us, and we will miss him dearly. His was a life well-lived.”

commissioner Bud Selig has issued the following statement:

“The national pastime has lost one of its greatest ambassadors today. Johnny Pesky, who led a great American life, was an embodiment of loyalty and goodwill for the Boston Red Sox and all of Major League Baseball.
